Summer in West Cork

July 12, 2016

Your guide to what will be happening in West Cork this summer!

It’s that time of year again! The weather (we hope!) improves and there’s an audible buzz in the air…its summer! Now, in Ireland, we’re used to having all four seasons in one day and the occasional spell of 4-5 days of great weather, but we don’t let that dampen our spirits. Summer is a fabulous time in West Cork and there is lots to do... so have a peak here to see whats happening...

John & Sally McKennas' Hospitality Awards

Hotel of the Year - Inchydoney Island

"Every time we tell someone our Inchydoney story – that we were at a wedding reception in the hotel and the waitress asked us how we would like to have our lamb cooked – people shake their heads in disbelief: food cooked to order, at a wedding?  Impossible!  But it wasn't impossible, and the lamb turned out to be perfectly cooked  – medium-rare – and utterly delicious.  Inchydoney just gets better and better, year after year"

Thank you John and Sally - we're thrilled to receive this award and a huge thank you to all our hard working dedicated team #proud

An Evening of Art with John Morris

November 13, 2015

Join us next Friday, November 20th, from 7pm for an evening of Art with John Morris.  We are excited to be putting on an exhibition of John’s work in our reception area and hope that all of you can come to share a glass of wine, meet John himself and see his stunning works.  John is an artist made for Inchydoney.  His ethereal paintings of people down by the sea capture for us the magic we see all year round here on the Island.  He has an uncanny ability to portray that primal scene where humanity and the vast ocean come together on the shore.  His style, as he says himself, is “not to record things” in a deliberate, premeditated manner but rather to evoke “just the moment”.

De Barra's Clonakilty

October 15, 2015

Here at The Inchydoney Island Lodge and Spa we want to highlight one of the great music venues that is on our own doorstep.  As Christy Moore once said, “There’s Carnegie Hall, The Royal Albert, Sydney Opera House and then there’s De Barra’s".  Located on Clonakilty’s Pearse Street, De Barra’s is one of those places that is alive with singing, music, and every spoken word from one end of the year to the other.  They’ve been named in the Top 10 Traditional Pubs of Ireland by the Guardian and in the Top 10 Best Surfing Pubs by Surfing Ireland Magazine.  They’ve also been shortlisted for both the best music venue in Munster and the whole of Ireland.  Indeed bands travel from all over Ireland and further afield to play this celebrated venue.

Guitar Town

September 11, 2015

Love music? We have music.  We have lots and lots of music.  Come and join us for the Clonakilty International Guitar Festival from 17th to 20th of September 2015.  The organisers are promising that this one, the eleventh, is going to be the most foot-stomping, the most head-banging, the most eye-catching of all the festivals so far.  Every year the guitar is King in Clonakilty.  It’s the town that Noel Redding called home.  It’s the legacy he left behind that turned Clonakilty into one of the most sought after gig dates for all artists big or small.  As Christy Moore said, “There's Carnegie Hall, The Royal Albert, Sydney Opera House and then there's De Barra's!”

A Taste of Inchydoney

September 04, 2015

Last night "A Taste of West Cork Food Festival" kicked off with our Gala Dinner here in the Inchydoney Island Lodge and Spa.  Our Head Chef, Adam Medcalf, treated all of us royally to a feast that will linger long on the taste buds.  In a packed and lively Inchydoney Room, the night was a dizzying assortment of the best of the best foods from West Cork.  Adding a touch of sparkle to the night was Bibi Baskin who has recently moved back to these shores from Kerala, South India where she owns Raheem Residency, a Boutique Heritage Hotel in Alleppey Beach.  Now back in Ireland she has made Cork her home.  You may have recently heard Bibi’s dulcet tones on Corks 96FM “Opinion Line” and hopefully we will be hearing much more from her now she’s back.  The ever entertaining George Hook, fresh from broadcasting his Newstalk Drivetime show from the hotel earlier in the evening, regaled us all from the stage with some of his choicest anecdotes!

Kayaking in West Cork

July 24, 2015

One of the most magical experiences I had recently was joining the great Jim Kennedy of Atlantic Sea Kayaking for a moonlit paddle through the waters of Castlehaven Bay.  A novice myself, from the moment I started to paddle out my breath was taken away by the eerie beauty of this moonlit trip.   Whether it was the mesmerising array of stars above me or the astonishing bio-luminescence around my kayak, it created a sense of magic that all of us in the group struggled to find words for.  It is no wonder then that Jim and Maria Kennedy’s Atlantic Sea Kayaking was named in the Telegraph’s Top 10 Places in the World to Kayak.

Surf's Up At Inchydoney

July 10, 2015

Wild Atlantic Way means waves and plenty of them! Every morning during the summer, you will see guests and locals of all ages with surf boards under their arms heading for the sea under the watchful instruction of our friends at the Inchydoney Surf School.  No matter what your requirements, everyone is looked after.  There are individual lessons, group lessons and summer camps.  For the more experienced you can rent boards and wet suits to suit your own schedules.  Situated on the pristine Blue & Green Flag Inchydoney Beach, the school was the first one to be set up in Cork back in 2000 and under the careful tutelage of Colum McAuley it has become a huge part of the lives of locals and our guests.

New Bikes, Brass Bands & Vintage Fair

July 03, 2015

Not to be outdone by the great cities of the world, Clonakilty has become the first rural town in Ireland to launch its very own Bicycle Scheme, “Clon Bike”.  Last Monday, the town was buzzing with the whirring of wheels and clicking as gears as we all took to the streets on the brand new 60 bikes which will be available to hire from 11 different locations around Clonakilty and Inchydoney.  The bikes come equipped with high-vis jackets, handy carrier baskets and a map of scenic routes and we’re delighted at Inchydoney Island Lodge and Spa to have one of the docking stations out here on the island for all our guests to have the use of.   It is another example of the wonderful initiatives that Clonakilty has become famous for.

Peach of a Beach

June 17, 2015

Having already been voted best beach in the country by TripAdvisor, we are also delighted to be named again as one of Ireland’s cleanest and safest beaches by An Taisce.  It is with great pride that the Blue and Green Flag will fly high above our shore. Both these flags represent our beach for its clean environment, excellent water quality, and natural beauty.
