South of Ireland Band Championships and Old Time Fayre

Clonakilty will celebrate its annual Bands Day this year with the 39th South of Ireland Band Championships on Saturday, July 7th. This showcase of the best band competition is combined with a unique snapshot of what Clonakilty might have looked like in the 1920s or 1930s – thanks to the Clonakilty Old Time Fayre. A very special day is instore as, once again, the Old Time Fayre will coincide with the celebration. The Fair Day celebrates Clonakilty's heritage through traditional crafts, clothes and music. The town will be a pedestrian only zone with everyone encouraged to dress in vintage clothes and join in the festivities and enjoy the marching bands, the themed street fairs and the camaraderie of a town that just never stops.

The event runs all through Saturday, from 9am, featuring lively street performances of everything from music to movie scores, marches and waltzes. There will be a packed timetable of competitions at the local community hall and in the community college.

The championships, along with the town’s Old Time Fayre, annually attract huge numbers of visitors. There is always something on in Clon.... so we hope to see you in town!

It’s that time of year again! The weather (we hope!) improves and there’s an audible buzz in the air…its summer! Now, in Ireland, we’re used to having all four seasons in one day and the occasional spell of 4-5 days of great weather, but we don’t let that dampen our spirits. Summer is a fabulous time in West Cork and there is lots to do... so have a peak here to see whats happening...

Guitar Town

September 11, 2015

Love music? We have music.  We have lots and lots of music.  Come and join us for the Clonakilty International Guitar Festival from 17th to 20th of September 2015.  The organisers are promising that this one, the eleventh, is going to be the most foot-stomping, the most head-banging, the most eye-catching of all the festivals so far.  Every year the guitar is King in Clonakilty.  It’s the town that Noel Redding called home.  It’s the legacy he left behind that turned Clonakilty into one of the most sought after gig dates for all artists big or small.  As Christy Moore said, “There's Carnegie Hall, The Royal Albert, Sydney Opera House and then there's De Barra's!”

A Taste of Inchydoney

September 04, 2015

Last night "A Taste of West Cork Food Festival" kicked off with our Gala Dinner here in the Inchydoney Island Lodge and Spa.  Our Head Chef, Adam Medcalf, treated all of us royally to a feast that will linger long on the taste buds.  In a packed and lively Inchydoney Room, the night was a dizzying assortment of the best of the best foods from West Cork.  Adding a touch of sparkle to the night was Bibi Baskin who has recently moved back to these shores from Kerala, South India where she owns Raheem Residency, a Boutique Heritage Hotel in Alleppey Beach.  Now back in Ireland she has made Cork her home.  You may have recently heard Bibi’s dulcet tones on Corks 96FM “Opinion Line” and hopefully we will be hearing much more from her now she’s back.  The ever entertaining George Hook, fresh from broadcasting his Newstalk Drivetime show from the hotel earlier in the evening, regaled us all from the stage with some of his choicest anecdotes!

What's Cooking in our Kitchen?

July 31, 2015

Every day, the best food and products from West Cork are delivered to our door.  Organic Vegetables from the Devoy Organic Farm in Rosscarbery.  Bright red strawberries bursting with flavour from Bushby’s Rosscarbery Strawberries.  Smoked fish and meats from Ummera Smokehouse in Timoleague.  Skeaghanore fresh farm duck from the Hickey’s at Roaring Water Bay.  The freshest produce of the sea from Shellfish De La Mer in Castletownbere.  These and many, many more are what makes our Gulfstream Restaurant one of the finest places to eat in West Cork.  At the helm of our kitchen is the incredibly talented Adam Medcalf.  Since 2005, when Adam joined us first, he has worked his way from Commis Chef to Head Chef and our gain is England’s loss.

New Bikes, Brass Bands & Vintage Fair

July 03, 2015

Not to be outdone by the great cities of the world, Clonakilty has become the first rural town in Ireland to launch its very own Bicycle Scheme, “Clon Bike”.  Last Monday, the town was buzzing with the whirring of wheels and clicking as gears as we all took to the streets on the brand new 60 bikes which will be available to hire from 11 different locations around Clonakilty and Inchydoney.  The bikes come equipped with high-vis jackets, handy carrier baskets and a map of scenic routes and we’re delighted at Inchydoney Island Lodge and Spa to have one of the docking stations out here on the island for all our guests to have the use of.   It is another example of the wonderful initiatives that Clonakilty has become famous for.
