One of the most magical experiences I had recently was joining the great Jim Kennedy of Atlantic Sea Kayaking for a moonlit paddle through the waters of Castlehaven Bay. A novice myself, from the moment I started to paddle out my breath was taken away by the eerie beauty of this moonlit trip. Whether it was the mesmerising array of stars above me or the astonishing bio-luminescence around my kayak, it created a sense of magic that all of us in the group struggled to find words for. It is no wonder then that Jim and Maria Kennedy’s Atlantic Sea Kayaking was named in the Telegraph’s Top 10 Places in the World to Kayak.
Set up in 1995, they are very passionate about what they do and take immense pride in it. The Environmental Policy of Atlantic Sea Kayaking is to respect, enjoy and protect the unique environment in which they work. Jim, a world champion kayaker, says, “We are conscious of being guardians of the marine habitat, and use our knowledge of the local environment in order that all our fellow kayakers appreciate not just its beauty, but also its fragility. We are fortunate to enjoy one of the most beautiful marine environments in the world in which to plan and undertake our journeys. But we know that for others to enjoy this special place, we must respect and protect it, and carry out our work in such a way that we enhance, rather than harm or deplete, its sustainability and its beauty”. This is why they were named the Overall winner of the Trip Advisor Responsible Tourism Award in 2015.
Since my own night time adventure, I’ve had the pleasure of introducing many guests of The Inchydoney Lodge and Spa to the wonders of this experience. They have an incredible range of activities. Whether you are new to kayaking or not, there is something for everyone. Jim runs Kayaking Tours of Cork City and Harbour, Summer Camps for Children and Teens, Mindfulness & Wellness Trips, Kayaking Safaris, Seaweed Foraging Trips, Walking Trips and many more. For more details and prices logon to www.atlanticseakaying.com. New adventures for this year include “Tours of our Islands and Caves”. This is a trip for those with little or no experience. Sea arches and caves are explored as well as a visit to a seal colony! Or you can join them on a journey from” Lough Hyne to the Sea”, leaving the lake and travelling down the narrows out to the sea where sea caves and marine life can all be discovered.
Jim and Maria are wonderful hosts and ensure that all their guests safely enjoy the wonders of our Wild Atlantic Way. Make sure to stop by reception for more information and soon you too will be paddling around the beauty of Castlehaven Bay, Lough Hyne and the many stunning islands that dot our coast. This is just another magical way to enjoy the sights and sounds of the marine ecology that makes Kayaking in West Cork the perfect activity that will live long in the memory. Happy Kayaking and see you soon!
