Your guide to what will be happening in West Cork this summer!

It’s that time of year again! The weather (we hope!) improves and there’s an audible buzz in the air…its summer! Now, in Ireland, we’re used to having all four seasons in one day and the occasional spell of 4-5 days of great weather, but we don’t let that dampen our spirits. Summer is a fabulous time in West Cork and there is lots to do... so have a peak here to see whats happening...

West Cork Chamber Music Festival
When? 1st July 2016 to 9th July 2016
Where? Bantry, Co. Cork
One of Europe’s leading chamber music festivals, which features concerts from morning to late night with world class musicians, Ireland’s only instrument exhibition and young musician masterclasses. Celebrating its 21st anniversary in 2016, the festival is well-known for its unique programming which mixes contemporary music with much-loved favourites. It also features young musician masterclasses, a Composition Competition, and a violin making exhibition.

Schull Blueway Kayaking Festival

The Carbery Island Challenge and the family fun kayak are just some of the fun activities you can take part in, and for the people who prefer to stay on land, there will be plenty of onshore activities to keep you amused - Schull is rightly famous for its cuisine and hospitality. West Cork Literary Festival

Where? Bantry, Co. Cork
The West Cork Literary Festival is one of Ireland's leading literary events and features an exciting schedule of 5 day workshops, taught by highly experienced writers and creative writing teachers. Subjects covered include The Novel, Short Story, Memoir, Writing for Children and Poetry. Editor sessions run throughout the week, giving ambitious writers the opportunity to have their work reviewed by a professional editor. Panel discussions concerning topics about publishing, finding an agent and the business of writing are also programmed. Children aren’t forgotten about, as a children’s festival runs throughout the week offering readings and workshops by such favourites as Darren Shan and Francesca Simon.

Masters of Tradition
When? 17th August 2016 – 21st August 2016
Where? Bantry. Co Cork
Masters of Tradition celebrates Irish traditional music with concerts in the intimate venues of St Brendan's Church and Bantry House, Bantry, and has become one of the most popular festivals in the Irish traditional music calendar. Curated by the internationally renowned fiddler Martin Hayes, it celebrates traditional music in its purest form and creates the space for the heart of the tradition to be exposed. The concerts enable audience members to hear unforgettable collaborations between some of traditional music's finest performers.

Baltimore Deep Sea Angling Festival
When: 25th August
Where: Baltimore, Co. Cork

The Baltimore Deep Sea Angling Festival, south west Ireland's oldest sea angling competition, is known for exciting fishing and good company. The four-day competition usually attracts around 60 anglers from both Ireland and abroad. It is open to all and you can enter as an individual or part of a three-person team. The festival celebrates its 50th birthday in 2016 and to mark the occasion there will be extra 'après-fishing' events including a hog roast in the village square overlooking Baltimore's stunning natural harbour.

Cape Clear Island International Storytelling Festival
When? 2nd September 2016 – 4th September 2016
Where: Cape Clear, Co. Cork

Now in its 22nd year, the Cape Clear Storytelling Festival has earned its reputation. Each year Irish and international storytellers and musicians are invited to perform. Using the natural resources of Cape Clear and the background of the island's spectacular scenery, all venues are carefully chosen on different parts of the island in the Club, hostels, college halls and in the open air. Running over three days, each day offers a variety of activities and concerts to suit all ages with a mix of free and paid events.
