Surf's Up At Inchydoney

July 10, 2015

Wild Atlantic Way means waves and plenty of them! Every morning during the summer, you will see guests and locals of all ages with surf boards under their arms heading for the sea under the watchful instruction of our friends at the Inchydoney Surf School.  No matter what your requirements, everyone is looked after.  There are individual lessons, group lessons and summer camps.  For the more experienced you can rent boards and wet suits to suit your own schedules.  Situated on the pristine Blue & Green Flag Inchydoney Beach, the school was the first one to be set up in Cork back in 2000 and under the careful tutelage of Colum McAuley it has become a huge part of the lives of locals and our guests.

Colum is an experienced surfer, windsurfer and life guard and has many Marine Leisure, Windsurfing, Surfing and Yachting qualifications.  He is a man of the sea and his passion is sharing the wonderful experience that surfing brings.  His team of instructors are there to help everyone experience the high of catching their first wave and once you get hooked, you’ll never look at the sea again without wondering about the currents, the tide and the winds and all the elements that come together to make those perfect waves.

Surfing in Ireland has come a long way since 1949 when a young lad, Joe Roddy, first took to the waves near Dundalk with a board he made himself.  Since then, Ireland has hosted some of the world’s biggest events and has sent teams out to compete in the European and World Championships.  But as Colum points out, to be a good surfer is to also have respect for the sea and to know how to watch for the dangers of riptides and swells and changes in the currents. He, his team and the Inchydoney Lifeguards are always there to advise and give guidance on the conditions of any given day.  You can also check out Cork CoCo Beach Lifeguard Service Facebook Page and our own Beach Cam.

As testament to the healing nature of the ocean and the wonders of surfing, the Inchydoney Surf School have also become part of an incredible initiative for helping children with Autism.  Surf2Heal teaches children with autism how to surf and feel safe in themselves and also in the water.   Run entirely by a team of committed volunteers in conjunction with surf schools, Surf2Heal is continuing to go from strength to strength, enabling more and more young people to enjoy the ocean and its benefits.  All our best wishes go out to Colm and everyone involved in what we hope will be an ever developing programme over the coming years.

So drop down if you feel surfing is for you and don’t worry if you’ve never tried it before, Colum and his team will have you surfing your first wave in no time at all. The other great bonus of surfing is that you won’t have to worry if there’s a little rain in the air! Surf’s up! See you all on the next wave.
