At Inchydoney Island Lodge and Spa, we are blessed every day with a view of the sea and shore that is always a wonderful and spontaneous play of nature and her elements. For this reason each of our guestrooms has their own private balcony or terrace from which the coastline and Atlantic Ocean can be enjoyed at our guest’s leisure.
But this is also West Cork, home to probably more artists and crafts people than the rest of Ireland combined and when you merge the natural beauty of our coastline with the exceptional talents around, there is a further experience of aesthetic beauty and wonder to behold. We wanted to bring into our rooms this beauty that is found outside. For this reason, we commissioned Majella O’Neill Collins, to create unique paintings for each of our guestrooms.
Majella is one of Ireland’s most exceptional artists and is also a native of West Cork. Her paintings draw on the power of the sea. They are as powerful in their immediacy as the ever changing swelling ocean and her colours are as vibrant and dynamic as the play of sun over the many colours of the Atlantic.
According to Des O’Dowd, our Proprietor “We know Majella’s work complements each room while also tying in with the theme of the Inchydoney Experience. We feel her paintings bring a sense of the outside scenery into the rooms. Majella was the obvious choice for this commission.”
Majella was born in West Cork in 1964. She studied at the Limerick School of Art and Design. Her exhibitions have been enjoyed the world over, in Spain, Switzerland, Australia and the USA. Her work can be found in the collections of The Office of Public Works, Cork University Hospital, University College Cork, The Hennessy Foundation in the USA, and in many other private collections throughout Europe, America and Australia.
She is currently the Facilitator on the BA in Visual Art Degree Programme on Sherkin Island and Co-Director of the Sherkin Island Summer Art Workshop where she lives and has her studio. She is also a board member of West Cork Art Centre- Uillinn. For any of our guest who become enchanted by her work as we have, a trip to Sherkin can be arranged at your convenience. Not only do the paintings bring the Wild Atlantic into our rooms, but it gives us a great sense of pride in the people of West Cork that our Art comes from one of our own.
Our hope is that you, our guests, will see for yourselves the magic that is our land and sea. You might even find yourself taking a trip to Sherkin Island to see some more of Majella’s work. You might pass time in Baltimore or Skibbereen. You might stop off in Castletownshend or Rosscarbery, Timoleague or Courtmacsherry. Explore this Wild Atlantic Way! At Inchydoney Lodge and Spa, you will find that we are surrounded by beauty, and even more so, like Majella, our people are our greatest treasure.
